Hot tip - Don't waste traffic!

Customize your "Error404 Not Found" page. (I put an advertisement on mine, but more on that later).

If your website is hosted on an Apache webserver, then follow the instructions below to drive your customers to your very own customized error404.html webpage every time they mis-type a URL to your site - or some other type of glitch occurs!

First, create two files on your computer (Later, in step-3, you will upoad them to your WWW server):

1) Create an HTML file called error404.html.

Make your error404.html file look how ever you want it to look. (More about how mine looks in step-4 below).

2) Create a file called ".htaccess" (without quotes).

Important: Note that this filename starts with a dot). If you are creating this file from a computer running Windows, then you might need to first call it something like "x.htaccess" (without quotes) - in order for Windows Explorer to accept it. Then, after you upload it to your webserver, remane it to ".htaccess" (without quotes).

In the .htaccess file create these three lines - replacing "your_server.com" with the name of your domain:

ErrorDocument 401 http://www.your_server.com/error404.html
ErrorDocument 403 http://www.your_server.com/error404.html
ErrorDocument 404 http://www.your_server.com/error404.html

3) Next, upload the two files to the root folder of your WWW server:

4) Test: To test the results, launch your webbrowser and type in a URL to your website that you know does not exist.

For example, if you click on http://www.blackmarketgold.com/sfkd4ee78.html - a URL which does not exist on the BlackMarketGold.com server - you will notice that it automatically redirects to http://www.blackmarketgold.com/error404.html.
