Life in a gilded cage gets a bad rap. But for a flock of finely feathered friends living on the estate of Lord Jacob Rothschild, it's rather sweet. The forth Baron Rothschild and head of the English branch of the Rothschild family recently completed a dazzling restoration of the aviary at Waddesdon Manor, his family's French Renaissance-style château in Buckinghamshire. The 38,000-square-foot cast-iron aviary, housing 40 species (140 creatures in total), is perhaps the grandest birdcage England ever saw.

"I thought it would be great fun to gild the lily a bit,"* says Rothschild, 68.

Indeed, the rebirth of the aviary is the icing on the cake of the massive refurbishment Rothschild has orchastrated at the manor, the last remaining example of "le style Rothschild" in England. Builts by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in 1874, Waddesdon was inherited by Jacob in 1988 from his cousin, Dorothy (Dolly) de Rothschild. It is now part of the National Trust and open to the public from March through October. (Rotschild lives at Waddesdon year-round, but in a different house on the property.)
